Recording for Deep Hurting was fun. I think Dave and I could have gone for several hours more. I completely hate how my voice sounds recorded. Am I the only one? (wait for at least one ‘yeah we hate how you sound too’ comment )

Shortly after seeing “Beautiful Dreamer” I read “Fear” by Pre-Scientology L. Ron Hubbard. “Fear” is considered by many to be the first psychological thriller. It is an okay read (in my mind, his best work) about a man who forgets four hours of his life and after some trippy events realizes that the universe is in his control.
But I noticed some things that Oshii may have gotten from “Fear”. First of all there is the idea of battling against ones perceptions, also there is a little girl that keeps popping up in “Fear” that also comes up in “Beautiful Dreamer” although the girl in “Fear” is kind of creepy and in “Beautiful Dreamer” there is the suspicion that the girl is Lum.

Anyway that is what I saw. I hope you guys make more Urusei Yatsura podcasts, they are the only ones I understand.

we play to learn how to win, how to outsmart, how to beat other people, and that mental battle between peers is ridiculously fun, even when losing. we are all happy to tell anyone about perceived flaws in a gamestyle, and exploits to help even the scale. we don’t have a secretive mentality, and we’re happy to help anyone that wants to be helped.

winning and fun are not mutually exclusive, unless you want them to be.

The tale of Urashima Taro reinforces the age-old Japanese moral lessons about respecting your elders and do what you are told (like what some fairy tales have done to keep us in line). The “Don’t Open That Box/Door/Whatever” lesson certainly resonates everywhere (the familiar Pandora’s Box myth comes to mind, and I would certainly say Urashima Taro follows that more at the end outside the Rip Van Winkle description).

For technical reasoning, here’s the breakdown…

Unlike the other movies in the Urusei Yatsura series that are/were owned by “Kitty Film”, Toho themselves has and still owns the second film to this day. This explains why AnimEigo didn’t get the film back when they were licensing the show originally. Central Park Media acquired it around ’92 or ’93, but as a consolation, they allowed AnimEigo to translate/subtitle the film and include a suitable box cover artwork to match the ones for their movie releases.

In 1995 or so, Central Park Media produced an English-language dub version of the film for a secondary VHS release, and what was eventually shown on SciFi Channel’s “Saturday Anime” block. Inducting more viewers into confusion for not knowing what Urusei Yatsura was at all (like me). It also didn’t help when they had people like Apollo Smile come and introduce the movie without mentioning much about UY than what some beancounter copywriter could provide…

I used to rent this out from the video store many times as it put me in the same mood Oshii wanted me to think about dreams and reality. The English dub isn’t that bad and I enjoyed some of the performances for characters like Ataru and Mendou (who ended up being voiced by the same guy).

There’s been two domestic DVD releases for this, one that came out in the late 90′s from “Image Entertainment”, using CPM’s dub master of the film with the English/Japanese score. A much better edition (though not using the Japanese R2 master source) was a 2004 Collector’s Edition featuring an audio commentary track with Oshii and a couple other guys (not the same one on the Japanese DVD) and a theatrical trailer which appears ironically ripped from the R2 disc. This edition isn’t so much “Digitally Remastered” as more a matter of taking the same “80′s LD Master” they had since the 90′s and trying to make the most out of it as I call it.

I kinda suppose this was more the case of not consulting with Toho over acquiring a better master of the film to use for their release, as it would’ve made more sense if it had happened. Japan saw a DVD release as early as ’02 from Toho, using a 16:9 anamorphic transfer and probably the best looking version of the film to date. The whole widescreen issue you guys touched on is really false. The film was produced in a flat theatrical ratio meant to be cropped from the top and bottom on a theater screen. It had the dual nature of being seen in either 4:3 or 16:9 depending on it’s presentation, as was the case for many American films produced since the 50′s. Mamoru Oshii called this “Poor Vista” in the audio commentary on the film, yet I felt he did a good job on the placement of the characters and camera angles that made the film convincing enough in a wider screen that you don’t think of it being cropped as some animation nuts would tell you. Probably a good example is to check out these two clips from the opening via YouTube, one from the CPM release and the other the Toho disc…

Just as well, I imagine that you guys expected that someone would react, so I’ll go ahead and take the bait. Guess I don’t have anything to lose here, or do I?

If Gerald’s taste in anime was universally great or if he didn’t apply double standards to worse shows a lot of this criticism would be understandable, but…no, that’s not the case.

The problem is that Gerald completely missed the point of the series right from the beginning. I mean…c’mon, complaining about the use of Geass? I could easily name plenty of “good” uses of the power (as in appropriate for the context, the premise or Lelouch as a character) but I’d like to keep this short.

However, the entire point is that Geass isn’t meant to be used in the best possible way. It’s basically a “curse” of sorts that Lelouch has to deal with. The show spells it out again and again. That Lelouch fails so much, either through Geass or through his own mistakes, goes hand in hand with this fact and what the series is trying to do (which is where the ending comes in, for example).

Suffice to say that some of Gerald’s complaints are fair, yes, but others are just so exaggerated and full of inaccuracies that I feel more insulted by his rant being taken at face value than by whatever stupid twists happened in the show itself.

Code Geass really isn’t that great in the grand scheme of things and the specific plot twist Gerald described at length was pretty stupid (among other crazy events), but that doesn’t justify the full extent of his rage and the utter venom of his comments.

Well, I guess he’s at least being honest about not caring and not paying attention to the details. Those kinds of things are surely heresy.

Speaking about the rest of the podcast, which was pleasant enough….Gonzo did make some great game videos. I like Suikoden 3′s opening sequence in particular.

Yeah, I agree that Advent Children had unnecessarily long and boring fight scenes.

No comment on Love Hina. Couldn’t stand more than a couple of episodes.

I don’t know if Valkyria Chronicles is really that bad (Also didn’t finish it) but I loved the game so much that the shear difference in characterization and tone of what I imagined a Valkyria Chronicles anime could be that it pissed me off to the point of being on my hate list.

Also I overall asked the same questions because that’s what I had wrote down to ask. We took up most of our alloted time doing the first interview, and then Audacity crashed so hard we couldn’t even recover the previous take. Sadly that did not give me time to think up whole new questions, although I did on a few as they came to me. That, and you would have never gotten the answers to the initial set anyway had I not asked them, since Audacity had casted them into the Void.

What really sucks about this is that I didn’t realize I had the gain up higher than intended, so everything is extra staticy! Sorry about that folks!

Personally, I think almost everything they’ve made after GSD hasn’t sunk quite that low again, even at its worst, so they’re at least gradually getting better.

As for Shin Mazinger itself, that was one heck of a show and I think you guys did a good job reviewing it. I didn’t mind the increased emphasis on the story, that actually gives the series more replay value in the long term. Imagawa himself really needs to get more work.

And yes…I haven’t been commenting lately, but I’m still getting the show through the feed.

Actually, my anime club had a slightly different experience with the first episode of Shin Mazinger. I had people coming up to be wanting to see more because it was just crazy and out there.

Nice ‘cast overall. Gundam 00 is indeed the best alternate universe Gundam series we’ve seen in ages, although it does somewhat bother me that they left quite a number of things rather open-ended for the movie, including what will or will not come out of Aeolia’s plan in the long run. I’m not sure we’ll see actual aliens though, but who knows?!

Code Geass was a really fun show to watch. It was entertaining throughout most of it, and I was pleased with the ending. It also gave me a new appreciation for Pizza Hut.

Unfortunately, Bandai Entertainment seems to have a trend with glitchy discs. Luckily, I haven’t ran into any on my BE discs, but then again, I’ve yet to rewatch many of mine since I finally legally bought them.

Did you guys go to PersaCon? Possibly an upcoming episode?

It’s unfortunate that so much changed between the two seasons, but the ending did turn out close enough to what the staff had planned. Explains why it was good at wrapping things up.

Btw, all the Japanese mecha have those motorcycle-like seats, unlike Britannia’s. The difference is you don’t really notice when it’s not Kallen (or a female) piloting one. Oh camera angles…kinda like how she’s only seen naked twice or thrice, but the show almost makes you think it happened more often.

I watched a friend’s copy last week and immediately picked up my own at Wal-Mart. Great movie. Laughed so hard.

As for Endless Fanservice (heh), it’s a nice little game. Grinding is actually fun and they definitely had no shame as far as the dialogue goes, which works to great comedic effect. I do prefer the main SRW games though.

Also the movie lacked Kirk-Fu(tm)

The mystery is decent enough to fool you the first time around, but even if the effect is certainly reduced after the fact, the characters are still pretty well developed for its total running time. Those that get enough lines I mean, but even the romance angle is alright, whatever jokes one could make about it.

Overall, good show. I haven’t actually played Fallout 3 and am just going off my limited experience with the first two, great games which I never finished, but this was still worthy my time.

The podcast seems pretty good so far, after listening to a couple of episodes, so I’ll definitely stick around.

After we recorded I was worried that we might have spoiled too much, then I realized that even what we did spoil is just a drop in the bucket compared to all that goes on in the show and once you are on the roller coaster that is Baccano! you probably won’t even notice it.

It bothers me that you got a few of the show’s details wrong in your explanation, but I’ve seen the show about 4 times through in showing it to other people, so I doubt many others would realize it. You definitely captured all of the carefully crafted chaos that is Baccano!, and I hope this’ll get more people interested in the series!

But more importantly, you need to update the LJ when you put up a new OSMcast. I wanna know the very second when I can get more OSMcast goodness!
