It’s that time again! The OSMcast continues it’s tradition of being a podcast where we cover conventions lately and occasionally some other stuff by going over the latest and greatest Anime Weekend Atlanta. The panels we ran, the panels we went to. The thrills, the parties, the giant robots, it’s all here!

Warning: Our wonder and amazing producer, DJ Inubito, is currently studying for a pretty major certification test, so Basil ended up hacking this episode into shape. Don’t worry though, it will never happen again! For all our sakes.

The latest DEEP Hurting is Guy talking with Dave Merrill and Steve Harrison about Lensman and was probably the greatest audio thing to actually have come out of AWA.

Next time on the OSMcast, we finish out our con coverage for the year by talking about GMX in Nashville! Whoo, cons!

While we were recording our AWA podcast tonight, mentioning how we somehow ended up (I blame Daryl) on a future episode of the Ninja Consultants that was also about AWA (in theory), they went ahead and posted it!

… Maybe they are ninjas.

Also wow they are already at 99! Good job guys! And congrats st AWO for finally breaking 100 “real” episodes!

That said, we’re at 85 “official” episodes so far. Which means we are dangerously close to hitting 100 next year. That’s kinda scary…

In case you have forgotten or somehow missed it (How you could have we have no clue, UNLESS YOU ARE IGNORING US. You jerks.), you can check out our guest appearance on The Speakeasy talking about Friday at Otakon here. You may have noticed we also got to talk to the guy that has brought the Art of Akira to the world. Let me tell you folks, seeing that stuff up close and hands on was quite amazing. Honestly, while Basil did take some shots of the Otakon exhibit on his phone, the stuff on the website is 10x more amazing and you should look at all of them. You can check out his website here, but if you can make it out to DragonCon and AWA this year please so check out the actual exhibit. You’ll be glad you did.

On the next OSMcast, we’ll be talking about one of the premiers we were able to partake of at Otakon. We’ll be reviewing Makoto Shinkai’s Children Who Chase Lost Voices from Deep Below along with Gerald from the AWO. It’ll be fun!

It's a con that knows how to rock out with it's uh, anime out!

THE OSMCAST IS BACK! And we have brought back with us the motherload of Middle Tennessee Anime Convention con report in audio form goodness. You can even tell it was even recorded at the con4! (Some parts, more than others. Also we originally planned on releasing this much, much earlier.) Since MTAC decided this year to Go to 11, so did we. We start off being all self absorbed and talked about our panels with the wonderful gentlemen of Akihabra Renditions (and SeishunCon). Then we drug in the guys from Tennesse’s own Chainsaw Buffet podcast to talk about the convention istelf. Finally, we get to have a chat with Nicholas Qualls (Senior Director of Public Relations), Christi Binkley (Director of Media Relation), and the big man himself Lucas Leverett (Convention Chairman, Senior Director of Venue & VIP Affairs). And in-between all these bits are on the spot and off the cuff interviews we had with the con goers themselves.

FUN FACT: We would have called this the MTAC Omegacast, but their name for next year is MTAC Omega! So I guess we’ll have to wait until next year as well. Darn! Also, this is probably now officially our longest podcast ever.

Anime Weekend Atlanta - September 17th-19th, 2010

Another year, another AWA. Another AWA, another podcast about AWA! So here is our con-report on Anime Weekend Atlanta 16, recorded late late Saturday night in our secret lair within the confines of the Renaissance Waverly Hotel. It covers Friday and Saturday since at the time of recording, Sunday hadn’t even officially happened yet! We are joined by the most dapper of gentlemen that are the Chainsaw Buffet podcast. As always, AWA was a grand ol’ time. We could type out all the awesome things we went to, but chances are you just listened to all of it! So instead I’m going to tell you all to go check out Dave Merrill’s webcomic ZERO FIGHTER. It’s pretty good stuff!

Also we know that the Scott Pilgrim podcast file is ending early. It apparently finished rendering too early and we didn’t catch it. When we started the OSMcast!, there were a few people we knew we just had to interview. This is one of them! So we decided to finally dust off our interview from Ohayocon 10 and present to you The Life and Times of Carl Gustav Horn, Dark Horse’s most baddass manga editor. the man has worked on such titles as the manga version of Neon Genesis Evangelion, The Shinji Ikari Raising Project, Clover, and others. He talks to us on how he got started in the industry, he thoughts on the importance of buying anime and manga in the US, and more.

What’s this?! A bonus episode out of nowhere?! Say it ain’t so! You see, at MTAC Odyssey we teamed yup with the wonderful gentlemen of the Chainsaw Buffet podcast to interview Spike Spencer. Spike, has done many a role in anime and video games, but is most likely best known for doing the voice of Shinji from Neon Genesis Evangelion. And since the Chainsaw Buffet guys have already released their version of interview, we decided to use the magic of RSS feeds to let you in on the action! So if you notice the completely different opening song, that’s why.

MTAC Odyssey

That’s right folks, despite the crazy, crazy rains that have plagued Nashville and it’s metropolitan area ss well as the rest of Tennessee, the OSMcast has soldiered on through crappy hotel dives and Dunkin Donuts to bring you you our super-omega-omni-cast MTAC Odyssey con review. It’s a whopping knee-slappin’ one hour, twenty fours minutes, and thirty nine seconds of Middle Tennessee Anime Convention Goodness. It has our con reviews spanning all three days, interviews with you the con-goers yourselves, as well as a chat we had with Media Relations and Advertising Director Christi Binkley and Community Relations Director Nicholas Qualls.

Since we are about to go to a whole other new con in a matter of weeks, it’s high-time we finish what we started with Ohayocon and bring to you The REALLY real real Ohayocon 10 Experience! That’s right, REAL podcasters talking to REAL con-goers. It’s so real, you’ll probably  not want to listen to it the car, for fear of wrecking due to the high amounts of Real involved.

And not because since it was stuff recorded on the show floor its kinda hard to make it out sometimes NOPE.

OH GOD MTAC IS SO SOON ALSO SO NOT READY

20th Century King: A look at Naoki Urasawa: the OSMcast! will be looking at one of the most awesome manga and anime creators of our time, Naoki Urasawa. Perhaps you may have heard of him! We’ll be looking stuff from as early as Yawara! A Fashionable Judo Girl (Maybe even Beta!!!), through Master Keaton and Monster, and even his latest stuff like 20th Century Boys, PLUTO, and Billy Bat. We’ll also be coving the various forms his works have taken, like the Monster anime (that has been running on SciF- I mean, SyFy, and the 20th Century Boys live action films.

Tsundere: Why do we love the ones that hate us most?: The panel we ran at Ohayocon returns, bigger, badder, slightly less out of our asses! Ah, tsunderes. You know the “I hate you! But I love you! But I hate you! But I-” types best exemplified by say, Akane from Ranma 1/2. This is a panel dedicated to those wonderful ladies (and guys in some cases) that can go from raging demon to moe moe in under six seconds. We, the intrepid risk takers and go getters here at the OSMcast! will be talking about this most classic of anime tropes. The history, the whys, the hows, and we’ll probably even get pissed off at you, before secretly showing that we actually like you.

The Works of Rumiko Takahashi: This is a panel borne from the hot fiery shounen brolliance that is the OSMrenditions (OSMcast! + Akihabara Renditions) this is a panel where we talk about Rumiko Takahashi. And probably argue about her stuff a lot. It should be pretty entertaining!

He has done some greats roles such as Barry The Chopper from Fullmetal Alchemist, Claire Stanfield from Baccano!, and all sorts of stuff.

Super Cool Music Link: The Peach Truck Republic! This is the fact the jamband that Jerry speaks of! The one that he plays bass in and also vocals! Turns out, Jerry plays a pretty mean bass. And the songs, they are rockin’. We played some of their music in the breaks to give you all a taste, but clicking that link can lead you on to even more amazing things like CDs filled to the brim of music, that you can actually buy.

Okay so it’s been a month between updates… again. We’d try and say we promise to  not be more like AWO in this instance… But now that they’ve started splitting up their episodes to have a different chuck each week instead of one huge update a month, we can’t even say that!  But this really should not be a problem in the foreseeable future. We hope.

But here’s a fun fact! I don’t know if we mentioned it or not in this version of the interview, but Jerry has gotten the most google search hits out of anything ever for this podcast. The only term that’s asked for more is “OSMcast” itself. So we know you like Jerry, folks. We know!

We even have panels! Crazyness.

Friday at 4PM in Panels 6 (Grant/Harding) we’ll be running the panel Tsundere: Why We Love the Ones That Hate Us Most. This will be a look at the popular character archetype, where did it come from, and why it works. This one will most likely have pictures and PowerPoint and snazzy stuff like that. In other words, we have to work at actually making this panel happen, with research and stuff! This is very scary!

On Saturday at 1PM in Panels 3 (Union D-3) we’ll be hosting the Podcast Jamboree! It will be a panel about podcasting. We’re pretty sure you what that is.

And sorry for the lack of episode. -_- Different people have different files and somehow we failed to get them all in the one place so Inubito can edit it.

Hell, I dunno either!

This latest podcast is all about the anime con that just happened. It’s called Anime Weekend Atlanta. It was pretty awesome. And so here are two nightcap sessions we recorded on Friday and Saturday night. Aside from the usual crew of OSM Central, we also have our ever-present buddies over at Akihabra Renditions. And add that extra something with just adding Basil won’t cut it, Chad Bonin of GaijINside on Friday’s section and Niko of MTAC and GMX fame on Saturday’s section. Oh! And some guy named Dusty who happened to be on the room Friday night. We get the BIG NAMES here folks!

MAJOR SCREW UP: And once again, we apologize for mixing up names on the first half. When we say Rikki Simons, we actually meant Jonathan Tarbox. These two gentlemen are both awesome guys and we feel bad for mixing up names. We blame the fact that it was really late at night. Because honestlt, Tarbox is a freakishly amazing name and I have no idea how we could forget such name. I mean, Tarbox. Man.

AWA was amazingly awesome! Most excellent panel shout outs go out to Drew, Richard, and Dave Merrill for the great Classic Mecha panel. Clarissa’s Blackjack panel was also kickass, and major thanks for joining us for the Podcaster’s Roundtable. Gerald’s History of Hentai and AIC (Darius was awesome too!) panels were wondrous. And, of course, I do in fact Believe in Daryl Surat. Helen McCarthy’s Unknown Tezuka Panel was illuminating. Carl Horn’s and Jonathan “Completely not Rikki Simons” Tarbox’s State of the Manga Industry was excitingly candid.

And any other panels I’m not thinking of, were also probably amazing.

I'd like to say Rail took the picture at this angle. So I will.

… Like Vertical’s which has helped me start working on my Xmas list. See, there was just too much stuff to remember it all.

Man,  just when you thought it was safe to listen to podcasts, we had go and post this. It’s our long lost MTAC episode! Okay, so it was never really lost, but I guess it is kind of long! It’s also REALLY keeping it real. How real? Well it’s a collection of interviews we took as ran around like idiots as we talked to any attendee we could talk to. And also possibly some that didn’t really want to, either. So I guess that’s pretty real. Doesn’t get much realer than that, really.

Yeah, I have no real idea what I’m talking about either. But I guess I should mention that the audio quality is kind of crap, really.

This week we decided to kick it off with our epic-ly long interview with two of the hardest working folks in anime fandom today:  Robert and Emily DeJesus of Studio Capsule. They talked about all sorts of things with us, like what it takes to make it out there as an artist and the Best Con Slogan Ever. Did we mention Emily also is the con chair for Ohayocon? Also joining us was (I believe) Richard from Akihabara Renditions.

Whenever I hear our Skippy Promo I think of this. Robert DeJesus is an inspiration to us all.

You know, with all of these various Internet sites (and there are actually more if you know where to look), I find it really weird someone had to write a “What ever happened to Robert DeJesus?” page. Did the idea of using Google just never come up?

Of course I’m sure that you can find out about Emily using those same sites, but I’ve heard talk that she runs an mean anime con. Hopefully when 2010 rolls around we’ll get to find out!

Middle Tennessee Anime Convention

It’s the Monday after MTAC Ninja but the OSMcast must go on! Speaking of the Middle Tennessee Anime Convention, here’s a chat we had about the con with Christi Binkley, MTAC’s Director of Media Relations and Advertising.  In other words, “Press Wrangler.” We talk a bit about the con and what it takes to make one of these con things happen.

Also joining us was the wonderful Marc Smazik of Akihabara Renditions.

Protip: Speaking of Akihabara Renditions, we totally stole their set up for this. Sadly, we also had no clue how to actually use any of it. As a result there is a lot of noise where we held the microphones like retards and the audio reflects this. Our apologizes. This probably isn’t a very good episode to listen to in the car.

This is actually merely one of many episodes that we recorded during MTAC. We’ll be doling them as they get edited, so stay tuned for more! It was an incredibly fun convention, and mad props go out to both Christi as well as Niko, the Director of Community Relations of Community Relations, for making it all possible.  It was my biggest regret that we couldn’t nail down Niko down long enough to get him on a mic. There’s always next year, though!

So yeah, we had fun! We totally want to go again next year if we can! If  you live in the area and somehow have not gone, make plans for next year. For real.

But we all now know that Nekocon is awesome. Now I’d like to point something we forgot to mention in in the World of OSM. You see that screen cap on the left there? See the next one below that? The place I stole the screens from is a site complaining on now two of the three main networks that air the recent season of this crap are censoring the fanservice.

This is the travesty that others have now bemoaned and wailed and the gnashing of teeth and crap. Bats are not fanboys' best friends!

Apparently the one factor that people are drawn to the show (more panty shots per capita than a season run of Ramna episodes starring Happosai) has gotten so outrageous the networks that agreed to let this show get advertising money that they are throwing cute bats everywhere to cover up the said 50+ panty shots per episode. Go figure.

Legend of Galactic Heroes 2 or Irresponsible Captain Kamina? Only the Future knows!

Now, I will make no judgments upon the person for instead of using the phrase “panty shot” instead they use the phrase, “pantsu.” Whatever. The point is that even they are confused as to why the networks are even bothering. And to that sentiment I agree with them. However I have a different solution for you Osaka TV and Aichi TV. It’s really easy: Stop showing the show and show Nodame or Tytania or something I dunno… Good. Sure, it’s a wild idea that has no place in things like contacts or anything resembling logic and how these things actually work. I’d just rather see good shows being shown more than bad shows.

But no, really, AWA was a ton of fun. We got to meet the folks behind AWO (Daryl, Gerald, and Clarissa), Greatest Movie Ever (Paul Chapman), and fellow new kids on the block podcast Akihabra Renditions (Drew Sutton).  Not only that, but they actually let some of us (Basil and DJ Inubito) on the podcasting roundtable panel.  THOSE FOOLS! But no really it was great and hopefully we didn’t sound too stupid.

I also (along with Lee) had the chance to interview Gina Biggs of the webcomic Red String (and the Strawberry Comics collective) for a little bit on Sunday, which will get it’s own segment later on in the week. And Inubito also took some photos at the con, and once I edit them I’ll post’em up on the site. Sadly while we knew there was some awesome FF12 cosplayers there that we had met at MTAC earlier this year, we somehow missed our chance and nabbing their photos. Sorry about that awesome FF12 cosplayers.

Okay so admittedly I just beat MGS4, so at the moment I’m busy going “OMG MGS4 MGS4!!!!” therefore actual show notes aren’t exactly on my mind. Though I am sad to find out the Wal-Mart sale is apparently already over so… oops. Hopefully those of you out there will have already realized this deal and have bought one!

The rest of you should follow my lead and steal I mean borrow them from all your friends that just obtained those PS3s and play Metal Gear Solid 4 on them. I want to say that this new Metal Gear is good enough that you’ll want to buy a PS3 anyway, but I know that’s just the MGS fanboy in me and that overall the 360 is still
the better gaming system.

… Maybe.

Kekkaishi is also an awesome show and an even more awesome manga. You should go buy all of the manga now. They have 14 volumes so far out so you have plenty to catch up on!

Yeah, it was a pretty swell con. The Cosplay Picture Gallery Thing we promised can be found by clicking these words! Definite shout outs go to froggyfluf who we thought was cosplaying Simca, but as it turns out it was another Air Gear character named Kururu. Whoops! The pink hair totally threw us off. As it turns out she’s also a pretty great artist so you should check out her stuff. Another deviant-artist we met was a photographer who took a lot of really sweet pictures.

Of course we can’t forget CSHC and Random, who put on hella osm shows that night!

The two martial artist performances were done by Shaolin Concepts and Capoeira Angola Palmares-Nashville.
