I have nothing witty to say here.

Normally on the OSMcast!, we tend to try and talk about the things that we like. Things that are awesome. Sometimes awesomely good, sometimes awesomely bad. Occasionally however, we decide to get our hate on. This is that kind of show. HOWEVER, what we DO bring along with this (2 HOUR) cornucopia of bile and anger is an awesome guest: Gerald of Anime World Order!

Haters Gonna Hate WARNING: This is a podcast about griping. Sometimes on things we have gone on the record of saying that are awesome! It happens! Nothing is perfect, not even Giant Ro- Okay ASIDE FROM GIANT ROBO, everything has it’s issues. And we will be talking a lot about those things. Please realize that we also do like many, many things, that you can find in other the OSMcast’s Index of OSMs Past, and AWO’s Review Index.

Gerald is absolutely right – democracy and anime clubs very rarely go together. Nerds are unmotivated at best, self destructive by constantly wanting to watch crap at worst.

Why the hate on Valkyria Chronicles, Kevin? Granted, I’ve only seen a few of the first episodes and I am only as familiar with the game as I’ve seen some banner ads, is it really that different from the game to be detrimental to the anime?

Great show and interesting perspective to hate on the decade!

Great show this is the first time I’ve listened to your podcast. But the crackling got to be too much and I had to turn it off. I think you are jumping over your levels.

When you speak loudly it happened. Just thought I’d let you know, keep up the good work.

As much as I don’t want to, I kind of have to agree on the voting in anime clubs. Some people vote on the dumbest crap. At the very least, compromise in some way. You pick half and the club picks half, or you set up the options for them to pick. Just stick with it because if you take away the voting rights, prepare for some bitching.

I love this episode simply because it is so much cultural blasphemy.

You are saying things I have thought (especially about Naruto, because, frankly, the “main characters are just intrinsically better than everyone else” trope bothers me on a philosophical level) but did not want to press the inevitable argument when I’m outnumbered.

Going to disagree with you about Noir (and Madlax, for that matter). Loved them despite their flaws.

Yeah, I also like Noir. I’ll admit it’s got a lot of flaws, but I still enjoyed it.

Kevin sometimes doesn’t read the comments or listen to his own podcast so this is a pretty late comment.

I don’t know if Valkyria Chronicles is really that bad (Also didn’t finish it) but I loved the game so much that the shear difference in characterization and tone of what I imagined a Valkyria Chronicles anime could be that it pissed me off to the point of being on my hate list.

Well…damn. I went into this expecting to hear Gerald ranting his mouth off about Code Geass at some point and that’s exactly what he did. Congratulations. The podcast didn’t disappoint.

Just as well, I imagine that you guys expected that someone would react, so I’ll go ahead and take the bait. Guess I don’t have anything to lose here, or do I?

If Gerald’s taste in anime was universally great or if he didn’t apply double standards to worse shows a lot of this criticism would be understandable, but…no, that’s not the case.

The problem is that Gerald completely missed the point of the series right from the beginning. I mean…c’mon, complaining about the use of Geass? I could easily name plenty of “good” uses of the power (as in appropriate for the context, the premise or Lelouch as a character) but I’d like to keep this short.

However, the entire point is that Geass isn’t meant to be used in the best possible way. It’s basically a “curse” of sorts that Lelouch has to deal with. The show spells it out again and again. That Lelouch fails so much, either through Geass or through his own mistakes, goes hand in hand with this fact and what the series is trying to do (which is where the ending comes in, for example).

Suffice to say that some of Gerald’s complaints are fair, yes, but others are just so exaggerated and full of inaccuracies that I feel more insulted by his rant being taken at face value than by whatever stupid twists happened in the show itself.

Code Geass really isn’t that great in the grand scheme of things and the specific plot twist Gerald described at length was pretty stupid (among other crazy events), but that doesn’t justify the full extent of his rage and the utter venom of his comments.

Well, I guess he’s at least being honest about not caring and not paying attention to the details. Those kinds of things are surely heresy.

Speaking about the rest of the podcast, which was pleasant enough….Gonzo did make some great game videos. I like Suikoden 3’s opening sequence in particular.

Yeah, I agree that Advent Children had unnecessarily long and boring fight scenes.

No comment on Love Hina. Couldn’t stand more than a couple of episodes.
